• The Egg Challenge

The egg challenge is a short documentary about how fun science actually can be. It is based on a popular experiment American children have to perform each year in science class; constructing a device which can save an egg from a high drop. We were astounded by the fact that an egg could survive a drop of six meters into cornstarch mixed with water. Thus we went out to discover why, equipped with a high speed camera. By filming the impact of eggs onto a variety of liquids like cornstarch with water, but also pure water and a viscoelastic fluid (borax), we were able to discover why eggs didn’t break. In this short film we show what experiments we did and what happens to an egg as it hits the liquid. Moreover, we explain why the eggs do not break.

    Biography Nick Laan

Nick Laan (born on September 11, 1984 in Rustenburg, Netherlands) obtained his Bachelor of Science in Physics at the Vrije Universiteit (VU) in Amsterdam in 2008. Nick obtained his Master of Science at the University of Amsterdam in 2011. During his Masters he did a project on the Academic Medical Centre (AMC) of Amsterdam of which the work has been published. His Master was a collaborative project with the AMC and the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI). In this project, the use of Optical Coherence Tomography in volume determination of a blood drop was investigated. After finishing his Master, Nick started his PhD at the University of Amsterdam under the supervision of Dr. K.G. de Bruin and Prof. Dr. D. Bonn. As part of the Soft Matter group from the Institute of Physics (IoP), Nick incorporates fluid dynamics with Bloodstain Pattern Analysis (BPA). The subject of his PhD is to investigate whether the velocity of a blood drop can be determined from a dried bloodstain to improve BPA methodologies which are used on crimes scenes.

    Biography Siesja Kamphuis

Siesja Kamphuis (born on July 30th in Enschede, Netherlands), moved to the capital, Amsterdam, in 2009 to start the bachelor Psychobiology at the University of Amsterdam. After successfully finishing her bachelor in 2012, she started her master Forensic Science at the same university.
By ‘just doing it’, she taught herself photography. After 5 years of still images, her attention was drawn by moving images. In her spare time she participated in, two documentary classes and she created short films where the image itself plays the most important role.
