• Indonesia Bans Chinese Milk Products

    CHAN:
And the tainted milk has also made its way to Indonesia. Supermarket shelves have been cleared of the suspect products and official warnings published to alert people to the danger. Here’s more.

    STORY:
Jakarta’s governor, Fauzi Bowo, gave the official position on all kinds of milk and milk-related products that come from China.

    [Fauzi Bowo, Jakarta Governor]:
“If in other countries these kinds of products are already pulled out, why must we wait until victims show up?”

The head of the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency, Husniah Rubiana Thamrin, says widespread testing of Chinese products started on Tuesday.

[Husniah Rubiana Thamrin, Head of Food and Drug Agency]:
“We have stopped the import of dairy products from China sinceSeptember 18, 2008. We have banned all dairy products from China.”

The agency is also clearing shelves of other Chinese dairy products.

[Husniah Rubiana Thamrin, Head of Food and Drug Agency]:
“We have taken those products from shelves and sealed them untilwe are done with the investigation.”

The government opened a hot line for the public to ring if they see a variety of products such as wafer sticks, yogurts, ice creams, milk drinks and sweets on sale.

Raids in shops are ongoing and Thamrin says the agency will warn distributors selling the products, and if they fail to comply legal action will be taken against them. The maximum penalty for a violation is a fine of over 200,000 U.S. dollars and five years in jail.
