A cancer-causing toxin was found in milk produced by China’s largest dairy company, on Saturday. The Chinese food safety watchdog discovered high levels of aflatoxin in cartons of milk from the Mengniu Dairy Group and another smaller company. The latest food safety scandal has attracted a wave of criticisms from Chinese netizens.
It’s the latest food scare in China. High levels of a cancer-causing toxin were found in milk from China’s largest dairy company, the Mengniu Dairy Group.
On Saturday, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine (AQSIQ) discovered high levels of aflatoxin in milk products from a Mengniu factory in Sichuan Province. The toxin was also found in milk from a smaller company—the Changfu Dairy Industry Group—in Fujian Province.
On Monday, the Chinese food safety watchdog published on its website that moldy feed is the cause of high concentrations of aflatoxin in milk at the two companies.
Aflatoxin comes from a fungus that’s found in grains and legumes such as peanuts, soybeans, corn and wheat. The toxin shows up in the milk of cows fed with moldy and rotten crops.
The latest food scare has attracted an outburst of criticism from Chinese netizens.
CNN cited one Sina Weibo blogger saying, (quote) “Don’t ever blame us on buying foreign goods… If I have a baby one day, I will also buy safer milk powder produced overseas.”
Another blogger wrote, (quote) “Let us boycott Mengniu altogether.”
The Chinese dairy industry has been devastated by a series of food safety scandals.
In 2008, melamine-tainted milk killed at least six babies and caused about 300,000 children to become ill.
According to CNN, in April this year, police in southwestern China confiscated about 30 US tons of melamine-tainted milk to be used for making ice cream.
Reuters reported earlier this month, a Chinese woman and her husband spiked milk sold by a competitor with industrial salt nitrite, killing three children and causing 36 to become sick.
