STORYLINE:
Recalls of food including candies and biscuits thought to contain tainted Chinese milk products expanded around Asia and Europe on Thursday, as more and more parents swarmed to medical clinics to have their children tested for any complications.
Chinese baby formula tainted with the industrial chemical, melamine, has been blamed for the deaths of four children and making 53-thousand infants sick in China.
Health experts say ingesting a small amount of the chemical poses no danger, but melamine can cause kidney stones and lead to kidney failure and children are particularly vulnerable.
Scores of parents have visited a makeshift health centre in Hong Kong including one woman who brought in her 18 month old baby for a check up.
“My baby had Yili milk for two to three months�so I’m worried. I came here for a check up to see whether my baby has got anything, so that I can feel more relaxed,” Lai said.
It was a sentiment shared by a father of a 7-month old baby who said: “In this situation, everyone’s worried about the problems with milk formula that babies have.”
Authorities in China were pulling White Rabbit candy from shelves in Shanghai and the southern province of Hainan.
The Shanghai government’s quality watchdog was investigating the use of melamine in the White Rabbit candy, official Xinhua News Agency reported, quoting Chen Qiwei, Shanghai government spokesman.
The Shanghai government has urged a subsidiary of Bright Food Group Company to stop the sales of the candy and pull them off the shelves, and to recall those slated for export, it said.
It is not clear if China’s safety watchdog has ordered a nationwide recall of the candy. In AP Television pictures shoppers could still be seen buying the products in Beijing.
